Many young people want to become teen models. Well, if you are one among them, you have to search and find out about all things you need to know in order to enter the field. Usually, agencies conduct open castings where new faces are left with a chance of getting selected. Experience in one or the other related fields, whether in print or in television is considered an added advantage.

Despite the common belief, breaking into the modelling industry requires a lot of things other than beauty. It requires dedication, smartness and perseverance for one to succeed. Firstly, one needs to realize that it is rather difficult to become a top fashion model in a highly competitive industry as this. Millions of aspirants chase the dream but only a handful of them actually make it to the top as highly paid fashion models. Even then, many dedicated people succeed as part time models and benefit from an exhilarating life style by being paid well.

There are several different sub types and levels for an aspirant to pursue a career in modeling. And, if your expectations happen to be realistic, you do not have to feel discouraged. There are different kinds of modelling areas such as child modelling, runway or ramp modelling as seen in fashion shows, plus sized modelling where models are of size 10 and above, and body parts modelling. One example for body parts modelling is the hands you can see in a diamond ring advertisement on a billboard or in the channels. The list of opportunities is one of a long one. But the first thing is that you need to look at yourself, be honest in your assessment and see where you fit in or qualify. Glance through the images of models in fashion magazines and see how you measure up or fare compared to them.

Starting a modeling career on a positive note is not at all easy. It is true that modelling is all about the right figure and looks but the factor that determine whether a model is successful or not comprises the 4 D’s of Desire, Determination, Dedication and Devotion. There is stiff competition in the fashion business and every assignment, project or job usually has literally hundreds of applicants and models bent on showing their professionalism so as to end up on top.

However, there are a few tips that you as a model should remember. Make it a point to always show up on time. Your job is most likely to be in a different location each time you are called for the shoot. So always have some buffer time for the time lost in traffic, getting lost or looking for parking. Always make yourselves available. The last thing any model wants is to miss out on some job opportunities or assignments just because they missed a call; so always make it a point to return the calls promptly and that your modelling agency or the clients have an alternate cell number along with the main one.

The Versova police have decided to check the phone records of model Natasha Padbidri (31), who committed suicide on Sunday, to know what kind of depression was she going through and if she had spoken to anyone about it. Meanwhile, the investigators have ruled out any kind of foul play in the incident.

A police officer of the Versova police station said, “So far, the cause that has come to light is that Natasha was allegedly depressed because of lack of modelling assignments. A few years ago, she had also suffered a fractured leg and an iron rod had to be inserted in her right leg. This might have affected her ability to walk the ramp, leading to lack of assignments.” Natasha was found hanging in her room on the 5th floor of a building in Mandir Masjid on Yari Road, Andheri (west) by her brother who had gone to her house to enquire about why had she not come to the family residence on the ground floor for lunch. Usually, one gets to know about the latest in trends by monitoring the attire of celebrities and models. Slowly, the clothes they wear are adopted by fashion conscious people, and others imitate. This way, it becomes the newest trend in the world of fashion. It is the designer’s brain that is doing the work in bringing a new fashion style to work. In other words they are the trend setters and can forecast what the “in” thing is. Every designer has got his own style and he or she will incorporate it while creating his or her own style of fashion clothes. Regarding personalized styles, most are appealing to the teenagers as these youngsters are always on the look out for something new and unique. The only thing is that it has to differentiate them from others.  A lot of individuals, both the males and the females, and the young and the old would like to test their luck in modelling. It could be high fashion or swimsuit, and sometimes it might be the commercial print. And, people in millions aspire for a career in the modelling industry.

However, the lesser known thing is that many are not aware of the fact that not every fashion modelling agency is looking for the same kind of attributes. If you take a closer look, you will see that different agencies employ different models whose features and skin tones differ. They want to create a unique or different look during their campaigns. This means that there are no written or clearly laid out norms in the modelling industry. While a fashion model agency is bound to have certain expectations from their models, those attributes may not always be of the same kind.

Have you ever been to an open call at some of the big fashion model agencies? A particular time in a week or month is set aside by many of the fashion modelling agencies to attract newcomers whereby they permit aspiring models to come for screening. The aspirants will bring along a portfolio comprising a few snapshots. If one can believe, most of these popular fashion agencies are not searching for glamour shots or any made-up photos all the time. They just want to see how the aspirant truly looks like, devoid of any make-up. However, the person’s complexion, health of the hair, teeth and figure are all vital when it comes to the different aspects of modelling.

It is recommended that you engage the services of some professional photographer to make a portfolio of pictures for you, and then take it to the model agency you are interested in. With the advent of the internet, the web sites of some big agencies have quite a bit to offer in regards to starting a career in the modelling field.  These fashion model agencies will let you contact them via e-mail. And you will be required to attach a few photographs for screening purposes. In some instances, modelling agencies may even fly you out to conduct a test shoot.

Diesel’s Stupid Ad Campaign Earns Award & Ban

July 01, 2010

Diesel’s Stupid Ad Campaign Earns Award & BanChances are you’ve seen Diesel’s latest controversial ad campaign called ‘Be Stupid.’ There’s Pixie Geldof riding backwards on the handlebars of a bike (in 4-inch heels no less) and a striking brunette clad solely in a bikini taking a photograph of her nether regions while an irritated lion looks on. No, it’s not the smartest ad campaign, but then, they knew that. Brain cells aside, Diesel did manage to score a pretty prestigious award thanks to the campaign. “Anomaly, creator of Diesel’s ‘be stupid’ ad campaign… [won] the Grand Prix for outdoor advertising at this year’s Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival,” saysFast Company.

(‘DiggThis’)While Diesel’s manifesto on idiocy has found quit a few fans in the ad world, it’s managed to piss off the Brits. The British Advertising Standards Authority has in fact banned some of the same ads that were being toasted in Cannes just weeks prior. “Diesel’s ‘Be Stupid’ campaign, which featured female models flashing their (mostly unseen) breasts at security cameras and snapping crotch shots of themselves, has been blasted by the ad watchdog for being indecent and antisocial, according to the paper,” says Stylist. Chalk it up to a simple case of British conservatism and French adoration of all things titillating. Regardless, in the fashion ad space all press is good press. Meaning, boycotts and all, this controversial campaign has proven to be anything but its slogan.

Avoid modelling scams.

Modelling is not a cheap or free industry to be a part of. To think that you can enter the industry with no one knowing your name or work ethic and they will pay your way is ridiculous to even consider.

DO NOT PAY ANY MONEY TO AGENCIES UPFRONT TO JOIN AGENCIES OR CASTINGS……

Remember that an agency will never ask for money. Casting and test shoots should be free. Legitimate modelling agencies must have an office that they can easily visit! Beware of castings in hotels or hard to reach areas.

Major point. If you wish to have a company to represent you, contacting potential clients for you and ultimately gathering expenses because of you then what makes you think they should be required to work for free? When was the last time you revived your long distance phone bill? Now think about agents who are making such calls for 10 to 100 models. Some agents get models jobs and the models turn the jobs down, don’t show up for them or other wise don’t complete the assignment which means the agent is stuck with the expenses.
Bottom line. You are going to pay for promotional items to model. The question is. How much? And what for. Here is a helpful guide to understanding what is reasonable and what is not.

Are there any scams? Sure there are, Are there a lot of them? Yes unfortunately. Most people who cry scam can’t tell you what makes a scam and what doesn’t. If you pay for something and never receive it and the company had and has no intention on delivering it… then you got scammed. If you pay for something and you receive it whether you get the results from it you expected or not. You didn’t get scammed.

So you’ve caught the eye of a modelling agent and they want to sign you to their agency, what now? Stories abound of unscrupulous agents taking advantage of eager young girls with a dream so how can you know if that interested agent is the real deal or a scam artist? There are some tell-tale signs that an agent or modelling agency is not above board. When an agency has a genuine interest in you as a model there are certain things they will NEVER ask of you, and a few seemingly outlandish things that they might. Just what are those things? Let’s take a look.

1. A truly interested agent will never ask you for money.
They will never suggest to you that you need to spend money to make money. If an agent sees real potential in you that is where they will make their money, by taking a reasonable cut of the work that they get for you (usually no more than 15%). Legitimate modelling agencies do not have handling fees, signing fees, agency fees (outside of their cut of work done as noted above) or any other kind of up front before-you-can-be-signed fee.

2. Another thing that models legitimately need but should never be expected to pay for is a comp card.
A comp card is the models equivalent of a business card. It is usually about the size of a 4×6 photograph, has between 3 and 5 shots of a model with different looks and includes a brief bio that includes basic info like eye colour, hair colour, height, weight, age, and shoe size. Some aspiring models do pay for these themselves but these are girls who are looking to be signed, not models with an offer on the table. An agency that wants to develop and represent you will never ask you to pay for your own comp card or for the pictures necessary to make one

3. Becoming a model should not cost you any money up front, even for things that sound legit like professional modelling lessons.
This can not be stressed enough. An agency that is truly interested in developing you as a model will not ask you to lay out any money up front. They will be looking to make money off of you in the future and will be willing to make an initial investment in making that happen. Modelling is a business and businesses mean taking risks, a legitimate agency that thinks you can work as a model will take a risk on you. This means that they will never ask you to pay for modelling classes of any kind. They may ask you to take some classes, especially runway or posing classes, but they will never ask you to pay a penny to do so.

4. Finally, but very importantly, no legitimate modelling agency or agent will ask you to take nude or suggestive photographs, no matter how “tasteful” the presentation.
Photographs like this are usually highly artistic and require a certain degree of experience on the part of the model to make them work. Legitimate modelling agencies will not ask an inexperienced model who likely has lots to learn about their best angles and how to pose to take risqué photos. What they may ask is for you to take a picture in a bikini or even lingerie but these shots will be catalogue-looking, soft, somewhat innocent and not overly provocative. If an agent asks you to take a too sexy picture right away walk out the door and don’t look back.

How do I break into modelling?

Do I have the look and the potential to be a model? What types of modeling are out there? How can modelling forums such as Diesel Models help me get into the modelling industry?  How do I avoid scam modelling agencies? Is it worth travelling to modelling agencies in London?

The first stage of getting into modelling involves doing your research.

You need to decide what type of modelling would be right for you.  Whenever we hear about modelling it’s normal to think of those that we see in magazines such as Vogue and Tatler or the models on the Catwalks in Milan and Paris. However this makes up only a tiny proportion of models in the industry. Models and modelling can also fall into a number of other categories such as Commercial Print, Editorial Print, Children and Teens. Catalogue, Promotional, TV and Film Extras. Glamour, Petite ,Plus size, Mature, and even  Fit and Showroom Modelling.

Approaching the agencies

Once you have done your research into the types of modelling that are out there then the next stage is to think about how and which agencies to approach.

One of the easiest and most recommend routes would be to go through a company such as Diesel Models. Diesel Models are not a modelling agency, they were founded to help aspiring models get themselves into a position where they can confidently approach the right agencies.
