Why we think having a portfolio is good…and why!

Put simply, portfolios are the easy way to show people what you’re made of.  When you go in to any interview it speaks for itself, and you, of exactly who you are.  Not only that, but you will find almost everyone involved in the arts, the fashion or the creative world including film and television will have their own personal portfolio – it acts as your CV.

So the point is, when you are fresh to the industry, you don’t have an impressive CV of who you’ve worked for and which campaigns you’ve done.  All you have is your face and that one chance to get across just how right you are for the agency or job you are going for.

Now, what a portfolio does is provide a bridge between the two.  It displays you in a professional setting and gives a glimpse of what you could be capable of.  Basically it acts as a preview and as you go through you career, you can add to it, and eventually remove those early images and replace them with the best your career now has to offer.

Portfolio’s are fairly easy to come by and because of this we recommend using a Portfolio Agency, simply because there are a lot out there and it is a sound investment for any young model.  Be warned though, this is a business plan that is prone to being misused by illegitimate businesses, but with a little research it is quite simple to find a reputable agency that will take some amazing photos.

The last one I reviewed was diesel modelling, fresh on the heels of their anti-scam campaign.  They are a trusted company by those in the industry for many other reasons including their policy of insisting that all models under 22 must have a supervising ‘adult’ pr

Diesel Models can help any aspiring male model break into an industry that has never been cooler. Male fashion modelling has some obvious similarities to female modelling; however, male models can also enjoy some clear advantages.

Male modelling is like female modelling in that there are some stringent requirements, so an aspiring male model will have to be between 5′ 11″ and 6′ 2″ and under 175 pounds, however, unlike female models, male models often have a longer shelf-life and a male models career can often last until his 40’s. An aspiring model should also be in great shape, and some muscle definition is essential – although the bodybuilder look is never in Vogue.

Diesel Models can help an aspiring model make contact with some of the best London modeling agencies, so if your don’t satisfy the stringent requirements of being a male fashion model, you might have better look in the less demanding worlds of catalogue of commercial modeling.

Diesel Models can also help an aspiring male model create a high-quality portfolio that can be the difference between rejection and overwhelming success. It might be an idea to have shots that demonstrate a variety of looks: from business-wear to sportswear depending on what branch of modeling you’re going for.

A service like Diesel Models could help you get into a world that has never been cooler and, equipped with a good portfolio, you could be the next David Gandy!

By helping you to create a high-quality portfolio a service like Diesel Models can help you to break into the world of commercial modelling, which, although not as immediately glamorous as catwalk modelling can be just as rewarding.

Firstly, if you’re not the traditional size-zero or super-tall model then commercial modelling offers you a unique oppourtunity to break into the world of modelling. Instead it is most important that a commercial model is able to able to convey a concept or story and is able to connect with a consumer. With this in mind it might be a good idea to take acting classes, just so that you shots will exude that little extra confidence and so you are better able to translate the ideas you are asked to convey by the client.

Diesel Models could also help you break into an industry that offers a model the opportunity to make a steady income, whilst also offering a certain level of flexibility as commercial modelling industry is usually project based.

As commercial modelling is associated with brands and products it is actually one of the most lucrative avenues for an aspiring model with prices per shoot ranging from the few hundred to the many thousands and Diesel Models could be the gateway into this lucrative industry.

A Diesel Models portfolio could be the key into the exciting world of commercial modelling and should be constructed in such a way that it conveys a model’s character and an ability to tell a story.

If you don’t fit into the traditional concept of model a service like Diesel Models can help you break into an industry which has never been more accommodating to the fuller-sized woman.

Diesel Models can be the spring board that gets you noticed by fuller sized modelling agencies, but remember, becoming a plus sized model can be as demanding as any other kind of modelling, with similar stringent requirements:

It is a feature of the plus sized modelling industry that it often requires its models to be a little taller than “traditional” models and your figure should be proportional and shapely. Don’t be put off though, as often plus size catalogue modelling is usually much less stringent and would be a viable option for the less Amazonian amongst you.

A fuller-sized model will, like any “traditional” model, require a good quality portfolio in order to get noticed by the best agencies and therefore a service like Diesel Models is a good way to go.

Just because you’re plus size doesn’t mean you’re immune from rejection or personal criticism, don’t be put off though, and see any criticism as a compliment: if you are told how to be a better model then you’re being taken seriously!

Most importantly, Diesel Models can help any aspiring plus sized model break into an industry that is a whole lot of fun, a vibrant and vivacious plus industry that will give you the once in a lifetime oppourtunity to show the world that big truly is beautiful.

Fashion has now become a major part of British life, and a service like Diesel Models can not only help you become someone who models the latest trends, but you could become a bone-fide British trendsetter.

Kate Moss is the perfect example of somebody who has made the successful transition from modelling to designing: her range for Topshop offered a consumer the chance to buy into an affordable piece of supermodel glamour. Other British celebrity model hybrids such as Agyness Deyn have also broken from the traditional ideas of the “silent model” and become creative influences in the world of, for example, music and of course fashion.

Diesel Models can help you get into an industry which now accommodates a model’s creativity, and where your own creative ideas and ethical values will be given a fair hearing. This new model-led industry is a direct response to a prevailing celebrity culture and to the idea that the best known amongst us have the most to offer creatively.

So, why not use a company like Diesel Models to break in to a world that might eventually make you a celebrity? Diesel Models could be the first step into a world of celebrity parties and movie premiers, where you could be rubbing shoulders with some of the most creative and influential people on the planet. By using a service such as Diesel Models you can be certain that you’ll only be introduced to legitimate modelling agencies, but if your still a worried about getting scams there are a few things you should remember in order to protect yourself.

Despite what you have been told, most successful models were not discovered in a shopping centre or walking around town, and often agencies that approach people in this way can be scam artists. Instead, a modelling service such as Diesel Models will equip you with a high quality portfolio and that will enable you to approach agencies yourself, and that way you can be certain that you’ll only deal with the most reputable companies: this is important, if you’re offered an easy route into the world of modelling there is a good chance that it is a scam; legitimate agencies require much hard work on your part.

Diesel Models is an organisation based in London that aims to help males and females, primarily in the 12 – 21 year old age bracket, break into the model industry and find an agency to represent them.

Diesel Models is not an agency as they do not directly find models work. What they do is offer advice and instruction, organize assessment days, and assist with finding an appropriate agency that will then represent the model.

Diesel Models is associated with over 180 Model Agencies in the UK covering all areas in Scotland, Wales and England. They are also associated with a number of fashion studios that specifically cater to up and coming models such as The Blue Rooms (fashion photography), Pure Space Studios (fashion/commercial portfolio photography) and Sugar Rush Studios.

By registering on their site, users can access a number of areas of advice and are contacted by a New Faces Consultant to discuss which of their services could be of use. No upfront fee is charged.

Diesel Models has a tried and tested “5 Step Process” to assist models in breaking into the industry, and depending where a model is on that process, Diesel will assist with the next step and provide assistance.

The use of Diesel Models services are FREE of charge and there are no commitments or contracts that the model needs to agree to.

All models under the age of 22 need to have the full permission of a parent, and be accompanied by a parent on a first visit. This is for the safety of the model, their wellbeing, and to help guide the new model.

Through Diesel Models you could be working with some of the best minds working in fashion today such as Stella McCartney, Alexander McQueen or Sir Paul Smith – all based in London.

Like no other place on Earth, wherever you look, from Soho to Carnaby Street, you are never more than six feet away from an uber-cool fashionista. The fashion industry is no longer the moral hinterland that it used be, and through a service like Diesel Models you can break in to an industry that is awakening to new ethical practises and more accommodating ideas about what it takes to be a model.

Diesel Models can help you break into an industry that is unique in that to flourish it must meet the wants and values of the consumer. We are all aware of the controversy surrounding “super-skinny” models and the potential negative effects that these sorts of images can have on impressionable consumers; such controversy has led the industry to embrace new shapes, and certain courageous fashion houses, such as US fashion house Bryant, to promote plus-size models.

Another equally contentious issue the use of fur in the fashion industry, and whilst this remains a problem in some areas of fashion there is a definite sea-change in favour of more ethical practises and increased use of false furs, with models like Christ Turlington leading the way.

So if you’ve ever had any qualms about the fashion industry, you should realize that through a company like Diesel Models you can enter the fashion industry not only at a time when it is ripe for change, but at a time when this change is already beginning to take place. The fashion industry has long since been a podium for the views of celebrity models and therefore through a service like Diesel Models you can enter an industry where it is possible to finally et your voice heard!

A model’s portfolio is just like a CV and therefore, just like a CV, it is important that it conforms to certain industry standards. Diesel Models can help you produce a portfolio that is fabulous quality and not only shows you in your best light, but demonstrates to an agency that you can pull off a wide variety looks.

Variety is the Spice of Life (Especially in Fashion!)

The fashion industry is like no other in terms of its changeability, therefore your Diesel Models portfolio should demonstrate, not only your best looks, but a variety of looks: what do supermodels like Kate Moss or Jessica Stam have in common….versatility!

Tell a Story

The best portfolios, such as that offered by Diesel Models, will be able to combine a variety of looks and tell a story. This is especially important if you want to move into commercial modelling which often require models that are able to convey a story or concept.

The Air of Professionalism

There are certain things you can include within your portfolio in order to give it a professional quality. For example, you might want to include a couple of photographs in which you’re working alongside other models, this not only adds another look to your portfolio, but also show how professional you are when working with others.

Remember, the modelling industry is a sector that is hinges upon taste and quality and therefore the more that your Diesel Models portfolio answers these values, the more like it is that you’ll be a success.
